Meet Our Team

Dr. Joyce Heideman

Dr. Joyce Heideman

Dr. Joyce Heideman is a 1986 graduate of the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She joined Southside Animal Hospital in 1987 and proudly purchased the practice in 1991. From the beginning, her mission has been to provide high-quality veterinary care in a compassionate, family-centered environment. She values open communication and believes that veterinary medicine works best when clients and veterinarians partner together to support each patient’s well-being.

Deeply engaged in community service, Dr. Joyce has worked with the Capitol Area Humane Society and Ingham County Animal Control for more than 30 years, receiving awards and recognition from both organizations. She was a founding member of Pawsitive Impact for Pets and has devoted countless hours to rescue efforts, shelter medical care, and advocacy for animals in need. Dr. Joyce and her partner Teresa share their home with four beloved rescue dogs and a turtle—each with their own rescue story.

In addition to her work in veterinary medicine, Dr. Joyce volunteers with the Michigan PTA, where she advocates for vulnerable children and families. She is a very proud Nana to her granddaughters Aria and Aubry, and her grandson Greyson, who bring joy, laughter, and plenty of adventures to her life.

Dr. Joyce has a special interest in veterinary hospice and end-of-life care. She is currently expanding services at Southside Animal Hospital to support families through these meaningful transitions, focusing on comfort, dignity, and personalized support.

Outside of the clinic, Dr. Joyce enjoys gardening, cooking, studying history, enjoying bonfires, and playing with or training her dogs.

Teresa Marhofer

Teresa Marhofer

Teresa Marhofer has worked in the veterinary field for over 40 years as a veterinary assistant, groomer, and hospital manager. She attended Veterinary Technician school in Boise, Idaho from 1984–1985 before returning to Michigan, and has partnered with Dr. Joyce at Southside Animal Hospital since 1991. Teresa shares Dr. Joyce’s philosophy of providing high-quality veterinary care in a warm, family-oriented environment where clients and their pets feel known, supported, and cared for.

While many clients recognize Teresa from the front desk — greeting families, answering questions, and guiding appointments — much of her work takes place behind the scenes. She oversees daily operations, client communication, staff support, and long-term practice planning. Her dedication, compassion, and calming presence are truly the steady heartbeat of the hospital.

Teresa and Dr. Joyce continue to be deeply involved in community outreach, rescue support, and shelter medicine, working closely with the Capitol Area Humane Society and Ingham County Animal Control. At home, Teresa shares life with Timmy, her loyal rescued companion, who brings daily comfort, joy, and plenty of personality.

One of the greatest joys in Teresa’s life is being Meemaw to her grandchildren — Aria, Aubry, and Greyson — who fill her days with laughter, stories, and adventures.

Teresa also has a special interest in veterinary hospice and end-of-life care. She is currently expanding services at Southside Animal Hospital to support families through these meaningful transitions, focusing on comfort, dignity, and personalized support.

In her spare time, Teresa enjoys planting flowers, camping, sitting around a quiet bonfire, and spending time with Timmy, her four legged friend.

Deanna

Deanna, LVT

Licensed Veterinary Technician

My name is Deanna. I moved to Michigan from Montana in 2019 to attend Michigan State University, where I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Zoology. Shortly after graduating, I began working at Southside Animal Hospital and later continued my education through the Veterinary Nursing Program at MSU, graduating as a Licensed Veterinary Technician in 2023.

I share my home with my two cats, Jasmine and Cleo, and my dog, Kolby, who keep life fun and full of personality. My long-term goal is to work in zoo and wildlife medicine, and I enjoy gaining experience that moves me closer to that dream.

What I love most about Southside Animal Hospital is the supportive team culture — everyone encourages one another to grow, learn, and pursue their goals. I am grateful to be part of a practice that feels like family.

Kathy

Kathy

Veterinary Assistant

Kathy has been part of Southside Animal Hospital for a total of 17 years, intermittently since 1991. She is truly a caretaker extraordinaire — ensuring our hospital stays clean, our patients are comfortable, and that every animal receives gentle, compassionate attention. Her calm presence and genuine love for animals shine through in everything she does.

Outside of work, Kathy enjoys sewing, reading, and training her dogs. She has an impressive background in canine sports and showing, having produced two champions in the agility ring and two grand champions in the show ring. She is currently working with two new dogs — and one of them has already earned champion status!

Kathy’s dedication, skill, and heart make her an invaluable part of our Southside family.

Elizabeth

Elizabeth

Veterinary Assistant

My name is Elizabeth. I earned my Associate of Science degree from Delta College, where I also played soccer for two years. I later transferred to Michigan State University, where I am now entering my senior year as an Animal Science major. I am currently in the process of applying to veterinary school and am excited to continue pursuing my passion for small animal medicine.

I joined Southside Animal Hospital in July and quickly fell in love with the hospital, the team, and the wonderful clients and patients we serve. I am grateful to be part of such a supportive and compassionate environment, and I look forward to continuing to learn and grow here.

Hello! My name is Jenna. I’m originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan, and I am currently working toward my bachelor’s degree at Michigan State University with plans to pursue a career in veterinary medicine.

In my free time, I love getting outdoors and hiking with my two dogs, as well as spending quiet time reading and drawing. I’m excited to be part of the Southside team and look forward to caring for your pets with compassion and a gentle touch.

Amy

Amy

Veterinary Assistant

Amy is currently a student at Michigan State University studying Zoology, with plans to attend veterinary school in the next few years. She grew up in Colorado and has had the unique opportunity to work with a wide range of animals — from squirrel monkeys to cheetahs — experiences that helped shape her passion for animal care and veterinary medicine.

Outside of work and school, Amy is also a competitive dancer, and loves the balance it brings to her life. She is excited to learn and grow with the Southside team and looks forward to caring for your pets with compassion and dedication.

Molly

Molly

Veterinary Assistant

Hello! My name is Molly. I’m originally from Saginaw, MI and I am currently a junior at Michigan State University majoring in Animal Science. After completing my undergraduate degree, I plan to attend veterinary school with a focus on small animal medicine.

I’ve always had a love for animals of all kinds — I previously shared my home with a cat and even a leopard gecko! When I’m not studying or helping care for patients here at Southside, I enjoy baking homemade bread and knitting.

I joined the Southside Animal Hospital team in the fall of 2025, and I am so excited to continue learning, growing, and building meaningful connections with our clients and their pets. I look forward to meeting you!
